Your Moving Countdown

Moving is either chaos or calm. The only real difference is whether you ran it on a timeline.

Do a little each week and moving day is smooth. Leave it all to the last minute and it’s a scramble with a truck idling in the driveway.

Here’s the countdown — start eight weeks out and coast into the new place.

The week-by-week countdown

Seven stages from eight weeks out to the day you unpack.

01

8 weeks out

Start a moving binder for contracts, receipts, and inventory. Go room by room and declutter as you go — sell, donate, or toss what you won’t carry into the next chapter. Get quotes from a few movers (check credentials and reviews), or price a truck rental if you’re doing it yourself.

02

6 weeks out

File your change of address with the post office, and notify banks, credit cards, and insurance. Arrange to disconnect utilities at the old place and connect them at the new one for moving day. Decide your packing approach — room by room, or by category.

03

4 weeks out

If you’ve got kids, handle school transfers and records. Stock up on supplies — boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers, wardrobe boxes. Measure your big furniture against doorways, stairs, and the spaces it’s headed for.

04

2 weeks out

Re-confirm the movers or your truck rental. Pack most of what’s left, leaving out only what you need day to day. Line up childcare and pet care for moving day so nobody’s underfoot.

05

1 week out

Pack an essentials kit — toiletries, meds, a couple days of clothes, chargers, basic tools, snacks, key documents — so you’re not digging through boxes the first night. Finish and label everything else. Clean the old place, or book cleaners.

06

Moving day

Direct the movers and keep fragile items in view. Take final utility readings for your records. After the truck’s loaded, do a last walk-through of every room so nothing’s left behind.

07

After you land

Unpack in order — essentials first, then kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms. Update your address on accounts, subscriptions, and with government agencies. Then step outside, meet a neighbour, and start learning your new streets.

Congratulations — welcome home.

And if you’re not at the keys stage yet, that’s what the rest of the guide is for.

FAQ

Moving, answered

About eight weeks out is ideal. That gives you time to declutter, book reputable movers before they’re full, handle change-of-address and utilities without a rush, and pack in stages instead of all at once. The single biggest thing that separates a smooth move from a chaotic one is starting early and working a week-by-week list.

Pack a box or suitcase with what you’ll need immediately at the new place: toiletries, medications, a couple of days of clothes, phone and device chargers, basic tools, snacks, and your important documents. It means you’re not tearing open boxes looking for a toothbrush on your first night.
